Kudzu and friends
An exhibition titled Crafting Democracy: Fiber Arts and Activism is on display August 1 - October 25 at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County in Rochester, NY. Curated by Juliee Decker and Hinda Mandell, this exhibition explores craft as a "creative force to voice dissent, express hope, critique the curtailment of civil rights, and restore dignity to the human experience." RIT Press published the exhibition catalog, which contains an essay on The Kudzu Project: Vinebombing Virginia's Confederate Monuments.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Decker and Mandell have organized a craft intervention at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, the site where Frederick Douglass delivered his famous 1852 speech, What to the slave is the Fourth of July? Craftivists who want to contribute to this project are encouraged to knit or crochet 7" x 7" squares and send them to the organizers by August 15. Instructions can be found here.
